community impact

GTE + WE

Building up those we serve

You are what you do.

At GTE Financial, we are a low-income designated credit union that has faithfully served as a Community Development Financial Institution since 2013.

But what does that really mean?

For GTE, it means hundreds of thousands in annual charitable donations, thousands of hours of financial counseling and volunteer work, high-paying and rewarding careers, affordable lending, beneficial products and services and an unwavering commitment to improve lives and strengthen communities!

As a CDFI, GTE has proudly put over $6.7 Million in awarded funds to work, expanding economic opportunities for underserved people and communities, with a special focus on the growing Latino and Hispanic Community in Tampa Bay.

Additionally, in 2022 GTE Financial received secondary capital through the Emergency Capital Investment Program from the U.S. Treasury Department for $42 million, so we can continue our work with the communities we serve.

Supported directly by the Board of Directors, an annually elected body of GTE members that are unpaid volunteers, GTE formally adopted ‘Inclusion’ and ‘Diversity’ within Strategic Guidance in 2019. Before DEI was vastly adopted…we made it a part of who we are—No matter race, color, age, gender, background, or level of wealth, you will have a home at our credit union.

GTE positively impacts over 43,000 Hispanic members (18.8% of total membership), 212 Latino employees (39% of our total employee base) and a Latino/Hispanic community that comprises 26% of the population in Tampa (Census) with nearly 26% of Hispanic residents living below the poverty line (Welfareinfo.org) in a high growth Latino/Hispanic market disproportionally impacted by COVID-19.

We believe stronger communities are essential to a brighter future…that’s why we are passionately relentless about putting in the work.

Employee Diversity

Over the last ten years, GTE has been awarded Tampa Bay Times’ Top Places to Work (10 times total, 8 times consecutively) and Tampa Bay Business Journal’s Best Places to Work (9 times total). GTE has focused on DEI within the workforce, with the current headcount at 57% minority. GTE's board, leadership, and staff all reflect the diversity in the communities we serve. We invest in our employees by providing training and leadership programs to further skills development and career path progression. We are pleased to report that today 67% of promotions are minorities compared to 44% in 2017, a 52% increase. GTE ensures minorities are represented and heard at all levels throughout the organization as well as in the decision-making process. Tampa Bay has a rich and diverse history, and we strive to honor that. We are committed to the Hispanic market and each year we are making strides in our impact. By employing the right people, we ensure we can effectively serve the community. We understand their needs, speak their language, and support them throughout their financial journey.

Reaching those who need it most

In 2020, S&P reported historic closures in the banking industry; 3,324 banks closed with only 1,040 openings, often leaving distressed areas without mainstream financial options. Underserved areas then disproportionally turn to check-cashing with exorbitant pricing to gain access to funds. GTE is dedicated to changing this!

Expanding Our Reach

Mayor Rick Baker ran on a platform promising to make Midtown part of a "seamless city" where all residents have equal access to services. To an overlooked area about 40 blocks wide and 30 blocks just south of downtown, he promised to bring a major supermarket, a post office, a library and a bank. All would be part of an economic development zone in the heart of Midtown.

GTE Financial stepped up to the plate and vowed to provide the banking services to this area and those in need. Knowing how badly it was needed and the impact it would have in the neighborhood, we knew this was a great investment in our community. Giving back to the community is integral to GTE’s mission and we have used this location to provide valuable banking services, financial education, and community support.
